Name: Kara Zor-El/Linda Lang
Superhero Identity: Supergirl
Age: 16
Sex: Female
Relatives:
Personality: A very independent and fiery young woman, Kara is as dedicated to the good fight as her cousin Superman, possibly more so due to her need to prove herself. However, she is younger and more emotional than Kal-El as well as simply more prone to anger due to her own personality type. She has less moral qualms about killing, but still will not due so both because she respects the code the other heroes abide by and because lingering false memories traumatize her to the concept of committing murder. Kara wishes to become a part of Earth society fully but at the same time is still drawn to her kryptonian past, especially now with New Krypton; true assimilation is still proving difficult for her. Yet despite heavy responsibilities and a certain feeling of homelessness, she is still a teenager; it is important to Kara to enjoy her life with fun, friends, and possibly even romance.
Powers:
Weaknesses:
Weapons or Gadgets: Kara’s belt contains a few small explosives and blades given to her by Batman who insisted that circumstances might arise under which she could not rely on her kryptonian powers. She also has a JL communicator and access to her “Flamebird” suit which can store yellow solar energy for when she needs to maintain her abilities on worlds with red suns.
Miscellaneous information: Beyond her superhuman capabilities, Kara is has also trained briefly in kryptonian, human, and amazonian martial arts techniques.
History: Kara lived a fairly average middle-upper class life on Krypton, albeit with a father and uncle who were respected and genius scientists, until the age of 16 when her uncle Jor-El began to predict the end of the world. Despite his evidence and support from Zor-El, the tribunal refused to believe the two scientists and the previously prestigious House of El was cast into shame.
Before Krypton exploded, Jor-El and Lara managed to send their infant son and Kara’s beloved cousin, Kal-El, to the planet Earth in a small rocket. Despite her protests that she wished to stay with her family and people till the end, Zor-El insisted that Kara also leave in a ship of his design to protect her cousin. However, her ship launched too late and was caught up in the blast of Krypton’s demise. Thrown of course and encapsulated in kryptonite, Kara’s ship placed her in suspended animation. Decades later, she finally crash-landed in Gotham City Harbor.
However, long-term low-level exposure to kryptonite poisoning had left her disoriented and confused. When Batman found her ship, Kara fled. With her powers at full strength due to artificial yellow solar radiation in her ship, she wrecked havoc across the city before Superman finally intervened and calmed her by speaking in kryptonian. Although she knew who she was and from whence she came, Kara’s memories had been corrupted by radiation poisoning and her more recent recollections, such as the death of Krypton and how she survived, were foggy and unclear. While Kal-El embraced her as the cousin she claimed to be, Batman and others were initially suspicious of her story.
She remained in the Fortress of Solitude learning what she could of Earth, English came to her almost easily, at first. Using the blankets she had been wrapped in upon arrival, Martha Kent and Clark managed to create a Supergirl costume for Kara nearly as impregnable as herself. However, on her first outing into Metropolis in civilian guise, Batman and a group of allies kidnapped Kara and took her to Themyscira. There, despite her initial resistance and Kal’s outrage, she trained with the amazons and actually found some peace. Unfortunately, it was short lived; Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips, captured Kara and brainwashed her into becoming the leader of his Female Furies.
After Batman and Superman rescued her and brought her back to Earth, Kara tried to join with the Teen Titans. However, she found it difficult to fit in amongst them and had trouble taking orders which led to her confronting Lex Luthor head on long before she was ready. He attacked her with Black Kryptonite, causing her to split into two polar beings: one pure and innocent, one dark and malevolent. Disturbingly, even after they were remerged, Kara continued to have flashes of dark memories from her past involving her father experimenting on her as a child and then having her commit atrocious acts of mass murder with the ability to exude crystal spikes from her body. Moreover, while she had previously assumed that she had been sent to Earth to protect Kal, now Kara was having memories of a jealous and sadistic Zor-El sending her to kill her cousin instead. Her fears that this was her true past were confirmed when she did begin to show the ability to grow razor-sharp Sun Crystals. Falling into a deep inner darkness, it was not until causing mass destruction and nearly killing Superman that Kara regained control of herself.
Afterwards, she still suffered from flashes of horrific memories and dangerously violent mood swings. In an effort to find some form of normality in her life, Kara put on a wig and took up the civilian identity of Claire Conners and enrolled in High School. But between her own issues and her unfamiliarity with the drama of human teenage social orders, Kara soon lost her cool. Revealing herself to the entire student body with an angry speech about the stupidity of her trying to change what she was to fit in with them, Supergirl flew off.
Both due to political stirrings and a desire to find somewhere where she belonged, Kara then donned her “Flamebird” suit and entered the shrunken city of Kandor. There she fought several villains and overthrew an attempt to corrupt the government with aid from Power Girl in the guise of “Nightwing” wearing a similar suit to Kara’s own. However, even after peace was restored, it became clear to her that Kandor was not Krypton, nor was it where she belonged. Having heard during time spent in the phantom zone that Argo City, her previous home, survived the death of Krypton she began to search for evidence of it.
Eventually, Argo City was found by Superman and Supergirl on Brainiac’s ship. Astonishingly, Zor-El and Allura were still alive and in fact leading its citizens. However, once the city was removed from Brainiac’s clutches, the technology which keeps it shrunken began to deteriorate. Superman flew it to the North Pole where the city took its full size once more and released nearly 100,000 Kryptonian citizens. Kara was reunited with her parents and, upon examining her, Zor-El discovered that her false memories and mood swings as well as crystal growth abilities were results of her prolonged kryptonite exposure while in stasis. He built a device with which to cure her, and Kara’s full and true memories were finally restored. More herself than she had been in a long time, Kara once again took up a secret identity. This time, she emulated Clark by wearing glasses as Daily Planet reporter Linda Lang, Lana Lang’s niece.
Yet tragedy struck once again. The Kryptonians did not wish to assimilate into human culture, but cared simply for their own survival. After efforts to round up and imprison within the Phantom Zone Superman’s most dangerous enemies resulted in the death of several human law enforcement officers at kryptonian hands. In response, the US government and Lex Luthor launched an attack on Argo; during the battle, the villain Reactron murdered Zor-El. Afterwards, Allura wished to have nothing to do with humanity and, when a large force of Superheroes demanded the kryptonians who killed the police be turned over, she refused. In the ensuing conflict, kryptonian scientists used a combination of crystal-growth technology along with Brainiac’s machines to transport Argo to the other side of the sun. There, they succeeded in growing an entire new planet beneath the city dubbed “New Krypton”.
While Superman and the human race were banned from visiting, it became Supergirl’s new home. Yet when a mysterious “Superwoman” appeared first there then in Metropolis, Kara returned to Earth to try and discover who she was. There, she found mass propaganda turning many people against her and eventually found in combat with Superwoman that she was Lucy Lane, Lois’s younger sister, wearing a suit which made her seem kryptonian and working as a covert operative of the US government. As they fought, Kara became incensed at her betrayal and destroyed the suit; this had an unforeseen explosive reaction which killed Lucy and drove a wedge between Kara and Lois.
Kara is currently living what some might call a triple-life. As Kara Zor-El, she is a citizen of New Krypton and actively trying to discover what Lucy was doing there for the government. On earth, she has the dual identities of Supergirl and Linda Lang.
Sample RP: Cape floating about her in response to the lack of gravity, Kara hurtled through the vacuum of space. She skirted around the curve of the sun itself; its infernos only strengthened the young kryptonian and sped her on her way. Destination: Earth.
Yet another stint spent on New Krypton had failed to turn up any substantial leads on the specific nature of Lucy’s mission there. Kara was frustrated but of course not disappointed. She likely would have visited even were it not for the Superwoman crisis. Yes, she had decided to become a part of Earth’s society both as Supergirl and Linda Lang, but she also still felt most at home amongst Kryptonian culture and with her mother… despite her choice to release Zod and have him rule by her side. Kara frowned. Kal would certainly be infuriated if he ever found out, but surely her mother knew what she was doing..? She had to trust her to make the right decisions in her field, even as Kara had demanded Allura respect her decisions and life.
White hot slipstream built up around Kara as she entered Earth’s atmosphere, mostly unaware and operating on autopilot as she was preoccupied with her thoughts and had traveled this way multiple times before. Yet when she breached the clouds and the shimmering skyline of Metropolis came into view, Kara was brought back to reality with a wide smile. She had missed her “other” family here: Clark, Lana… and Lois. With a sigh at the thought of her cousin’s wife who still could not quite look at her the same any longer, Supergirl snapped her legs together and increased her speed. In a blur of red, yellow, and blue Kara descended towards the balcony entrance to her apartment. Despite her many worries, it was good to come home, especially when she was also coming from home.
