History (mainly origins, but also a little from every other time):
Before Nightwing, there was Robin, and before there was Robin, Dick was a young acrobat, preforming with his mother and father in the circus. Until one day, everything he knew was taken away from him in a matter of seconds and his life would never be the same. Dick had seen the deaths of his parents as they fell during an act at the circus. It was no accident, a mafia group wanted something form the circus, but they did not get what they wanted, so the mafia made the circus pay the price.
After his parents' deaths, Dick was left with no where to go. There was one person who understand what Dick was going through, and that was Bruce Wayne. So, Bruce Wayne took Dick into his home, since he had no where else to go.
While living with Bruce Wayne, Dick made a discovery that would yet change his life again. He discovered that Bruce Wayne was The Batman. And from that day on Dick was known as Robin. For years, he worked along Batman's side as Robin. Bruce taught him almost everything he knew as far as many different Martial Artists and detective work. And through the years, Dick only got better at everything he knew.
During the time of working with Batman, as Robin, he was leader of the Teen Titans for a while. As time went on, Dick started to see that he was growing away from the identity of Robin. After a while, he finally decided it was time for him to move on. So, Dick became Nightwing, even though Bruce didn't seem to like the idea all so much.
As Nightwing, Dick strides to show that he and Batman are nothing alike. He wanted to get out of the shadow of Batman. Since then, he would do what ever it takes to prove himself, fighting his battles by himself. Sometimes having a run in with Batman, never showing any weakness, trying to stand up for what he believed in and protecting others.

Another rainy night in Gotham, what's new, Dick through to himself as he sat waiting on his motorcycl, hidden in an alley, dressed in his Nightwing suit. It seemed more quiet than usually for a night in Gotham, even if it was just raining out. There had to be something or someone to go after.
Nighwing switched on his radio transmitter to try and listen into the police transmitters. If he couldn't find any one one his own, he might as well help the police with a few small crimes around the city. There was always some type of crime going down in Gotham.
Nightwing sat in the darkness of the alley. His black motorcycle and suit blending in with the darkness that surrounded him. The only thing that seemed to stand out was the blue symbol that stretched across his chest and down his arms. He sat there a while longer just listening to small talk and static every now and then over the transmitter that wasn't important as to crimes. The rain continued to come down, only to start falling harder. The rain tapped in fast pace rhythm on Nightwing's helmet.
Then finally something sounded over the transmitter. A police officer's voice came over the radio saying, "We've got an armed robbery. The suspected vehicle is a black van, believed to be headed toward the docks."
"Alright, finally some action," Nightwing said as he started the motorcycle, it roaring to life as he didn't waste any time in heading toward the docks. Nightwing raced down the streets, trying to slow up on the turns to avoid any slipping of the tires to the best he could. The rain was now pounding his helmet as he sped through the streets. Then he spotted a black van ahead of him.
"This should be easy," he said to himself as he got on the van's tail. The people driving the van must have seen him coming because as soon as they saw a turn, they took it sharply. Nightwing wasn't far behind them. As he went to take the turn, the sound of gun shots broke the silents of the rainy night.
Nightwing leaned in more on his motorcycle, getting lower as to avoid the bullets that were being shot at him. This went on for a while.
"Alright, I'm going tired of this game," Nightwing mumbled as he turned off down a smaller road. The gun fire stopped as the man in the passenger seat turned back around when he had seen the motorcycle get off of their tail.
Nightwing cut through a few alleys until he found the road he was looking for. He sped up and took the turn then stopped when he sat at an intersection. The black van came speeding down the road as it cam toward the turn.
As the driver went to make the turn, he stopped Nightwing and was caught by surprise. Nightwing sat there as the van swerved off and away from him. The driver slamming the breaks on as the van plowed into a lamp post. The van wasn't damaged all that badly, just enough that the air-bags had deployed. Nightwing got off his motorcycle and walked toward the van as the two men started to get out. The men were a bit dizzy after all this happening so fast.
Nightwing walked up to the one man, the man tried to make a run for it. "I don't think so," Nightwing said as he punched the guy before he could make a run. The man fell to the ground. The driver of the van tried to make a run for it. Nightwing pulled his line-gun out and placed a small packet into it. He aimed and fired, a net went flying after the man, easily rapping him in it. The man fell to the ground.
Nightwing finished tying up the other man and left him near the van. He walked over to the driver and dragged him over to the van as well. He then turned and walked back to his motorcycle, leaving the men for the cops. That was definitly too easy, Nightwing thought as he drove off in the opposite direction of which he could hear the police coming. There was always something to do in Gotham.
